More About Hyperpigmentation & its Causes

Hyperpigmentation affects many skin types all over the world. They are dark spots that appear on the skin which can be caused by hormonal changes, acne scarring, exposure to the sun, genetics and pregnancy to mention a few of the most common causes.  In general they are not dangerous but can affect your appearance.

There are some precautions you can take to protect yourself from hyperpigmentation caused by external factors such as sun damage. Spots that appear on the body due to too much exposure to sunlight can be treated by creams. But it is much more recommendable to protect yourself from over exposure to the sun light by regularly wearing sun protection. Many dermatologists recommend the use of sun screen regularly.

There are some further precautionary steps you can take to avoid hyperpigmentation caused by sun. These include wearing hats or protective clothing when exposed to sun, using sunscreen that is at least 20 SPF and not being in the sun during its peak hours when it is strongest which are usually between 10 am to 4 pm.

Hyperpigmentation can be at times hard to treat and can even recur. Treating hyperpigmentation by laser treatment is another option used by some to deal with this problem.

Melasma

Melasma is one of the three main types of hyperpigmentation besides age spots and post-inflammatory. Melasma can affect woman in particular during pregnancy and post-pregnancy. Melasma is not excusive to women and can also effect men but much less frequent.

Melanin which causes Melasma is the pigment that characterises your skin colour. Essentially Melasma is due to the increase in the level of your melanin production. The Melanin level increases at time of pregnancy in women which cause changes in hormone levels.

Although hyperpigmentation can affect the entire body they usually appear on the face and stomach.
