Foods play a big role when it come to our health.  Studies have shown the diet we follow can make a major impact on our health. When it comes to our skin, skincare and complexion foods also play a major role. In the past we have looked at this topic and have  written about if dairy can cause acne or if chocolate cause acne.

Just like the diet you follow can prevent diseases and improve your immunity it can also help with your biggest organ being your skin. In general, consuming fruits and vegetables are good for the skin since they can reduce overall inflammation which can help improve the skin’s overall appearance.

Foods that can improve your complexion

Certain foods can boost the overall health of our complexion. One of the best foods that can boost your complexion is green tea. This is because green tea has antioxidants in its polyphenols. Studies performed have shown that green tea can reduce wrinkles and treat sun damage when applied to the skin. Although there is still a debate if drinking green tea can help with your skin complexion green tea has many benefits in general.

Other foods that can boost your complexion are salmon and tuna. Salmon in particular has been shown to have many beneficial effects on the overall health. The beneficial effects of salmon are shown when it comes to hearth health, brain development and bone health. Due to its multitude of health benefits, it is considered a superfood in general. It is also considered a superfood for skin due to it having many nutrients which are great for the skin. To be more specific salmon is rich in Astaxanthin which is an antioxidant. This powerful antioxidant can help to improve the skin’s elasticity and boost hydration. It also works to reduce wrinkles and boost the overall health of the skin.

Other foods that can benefit the skin also are beans, lentils, tomatoes, watermelons, grapefruit, asparagus and red cabbage. In additions foods that contain vitamin B such as oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice and whole wheat pasta can also help with complexion.

Things to avoid

Now that we have discussed those foods that can help with skin’s overall health it is time to discuss those things that we must avoid. Alcohol must be avoided or consumed moderately. It has been shown that for both women and men consumption of alcohol can harm the overall health of the skin. Sugar must also be avoided. Sugar causes inflammation and can make the skin look tired and make it appear as it is aged.

Trans fats found in foods such as fried foods, baked foods and margarine also increase inflammation which is bad for the skin. In addition, trans fats have additional harmful effects since they raise bad cholesterol levels and lower the good ones. Another types of food that must be avoided are processed carbohydrase that are found in foods such as breads, pizza crust and pasta. These foods are harmful for the skin since they can damage the skin’s collagen. Additionally, smoking also must be avoided since smoking has negative effects on the texture and look of the skin.

Dermatologist also suggest that since each person’s skin is different, we must pay attention to how certain foods impact our skin. For example, if you see that consuming certain foods such as dairy and sweets impact your skin negatively you must avoid them.
