As we head to the beaches and the swimming pools to cool off during these hot summer days, we should make sure that we are protected from the harmful UV rays from the sun. The best way to achieve this goal is to make sure you are applying sunscreen when outdoors and exposed to the sun.
But there are also those who believe they can also perhaps use moisturizers when outdoors and exposed to the sun and it can provide some type of protection. We have discussed this topic in our previous blog addressing “Can I use sunscreen as moisturizer”. It is no surprise that many think this way. This has to do with the fact sunscreen and moisturizer being two of the most fundamental products in skincare and skincare routines and some moisturizers having some SPF in them. In this article we will look at the difference between moisturizer and sunblock -sunscreen.
What is Sunscreen?
Since UV rays from the sun can damage the skin, we need to apply sunscreen to provide us protection. Sunscreen helps to protect our skin from UV rays that can cause skin damage. In addition, it can also help to protect our skin from other harmful conditions such as premature ageing and skin cancer. The ability of sunscreen to absorb the UV rays from the sun before they penetrate our skin is key to its ability to protect our skin. You can find sunscreens available in different forms such as creams, lotions, gels and sprays.
What is Moisturizer?
Due to our skin losing water we need to apply moisturizers to prevent the water loss. Moisturizers help to hydrate the skin since they contain ingredients that help to trap moisture in the skin and prevent the loss of water. You can find moisturizers available in different forms also similar to sunscreens. The forms moisturizers are available in are oils, creams, gels and lotions.
When should sunscreen be used?
To be on the safe side is best to use sunscreen on a daily basis. This is due to the fact that UV rays from the sun can even penetrate on a cloudy day. You should apply sunscreen to all areas of the skin that are exposed and are not covered by clothing. When swimming makes sure to reapply sunscreen very 2-3 hours.
When should moisturizer be used?
Once you have cleaned and toned your skin you should then apply moisturizer. You should apply moisturizer in the morning and at night to your neck and face. Make sure that you gently massage the moisturizer into the skin. When selecting the moisturizer make sure you select the one that that is suitable for your specific skin type. The moisturizer you apply should address concerns such as dryness, oiliness and skin sensitivities.
Can you use a moisturizer with SPF instead of sunscreen?
Today many moisturizers contain a certain level of SPF. While many moisturizers may include SPF it may not be enough. If you spend a lot of time outside, it is best to use a specific sunscreen product that contains a higher level of SPF than a moisturizer.
