Skin damage can be frustrating but when it happens make sure not to panic. Panicking in not helpful since it can lead to unwise decisions. If you wonder can damaged skin be repaired the answer is yes but you must follow certain guidelines.

Skin damage can appear in many forms. It can appear as sun damage, acne scars or irritation caused by harsh treatments. No matter what is the root cause of your skin damage there are certain guidelines that can be followed to treat the skin damage. These treatments should focus on supporting the skin’s own repair process which will help to restore it to its healthy conditions once again.

How is the skin barrier damaged?

Skin damage at times is caused due to our own faults and at times is due to things which are out of our control. There are many reasons as why skin damage happens. But as we mentioned earlier the most common causes are sun damage, acne scars, clogged pores, and harsh skin treatments. External factors also play a part when it comes to skin damage. These external factors include lack of humidity, heat, wind or spending too much times in swimming pool whish use chlorine to keep them clean.

How to repair damaged skin?

There are many skincare products and ingredients that can help repair our skin. When skin damage occurs what we apply to it and what we consume internally are essential factors. These factors play a vital role when it comes to getting our skin back to health.

Using skincare products with Antioxidants

Increasing the level of nutrients is key when it comes to treating and reducing signs of damaged skin. You should focus on increasing your level of nutrients both externally and internally. The benefits of consuming foods rich in antioxidants are well known. It is also important to apply antioxidants to your skin.

Select a skin damage cream that is rich in antioxidants. Vitamin C and vitamin E are antioxidants which are very beneficial when it comes to improving the health of our skin. Vitamin C is known to help brighten our skin gently.  We have written in the past about does vitamin C help repair the skin barrier.  Vitamin C helps the skin by minimizing the appearance of dark spots and helps to even the skin tone. Vitamin E is also great when it comes to treating dry skin and issues related with post-acne scars.

Focus on improving your daily moisturizer

The regular use of a moisturizer should be an essential step when it comes to how to build a skincare regimen. Our moisturizer is essential since it should delivers more than just moisturizing. Our moisturizer should create an ideal environmental for the skin. This ideal environment should help the skin grow and develop vigorously. At the same time our moisturizer should be a source of fatty acids, topical nutrients and other skin supporting properties.

Avoid things that can damage the skin further

When our skin is damaged, we should also focus on preventing causing any further damage to the skin.  These methods include things like staying out of direct sunlight. We have written a great article about how to prevent sun damage which you can read.

Also make sure to apply sunscreen. If your skin is in such a condition that you cannot apply sunscreen, make sure to wear protective clothing to protect yourself from sunlight. It is also recommended that you avoid applying products that contain fragrances as you try to treat the skin damage.

Another step you can take to prevent further skin damage is using a laundry detergent that does not have fragrances. It has been observed that fragrances present in laundry detergents can be a source of skin irritation. In addition, avoid using synthetic foaming agents or facials cleaners that can dry the skin. As well, do not exfoliate or apply peeling on damaged skin.

Your diet is also key when it comes to treating damaged skin

We mentioned earlier the importance of using skincare products and ingredients that have antioxidants. What we consume internally should also focus on antioxidants that can be beneficial for our skin. Your focus should not be only on treating the damaged skin externally but also at the same time internally by your diet.

We can help our skin in the repair process internally by our diet. We can do this by consuming nutrient rich and organic foods. Is best to avoid sugar and processed foods. Drinking plenty of water is also essential since it keeps you hydrated. Focus on consuming antioxidant foods throughout the day. These include leafy greens, healthy fats and quality proteins. It is important that your diet is based around foods that help with reducing inflammation.
