Our skin benefits greatly from the use of vitamins. Vitamins and minerals have the capability to make our skin smooth, bright and flexible. One of those vitamins that is beneficial for the skin is vitamin E.
Vitamin E behaves as an antioxidant that helps to provide protection to our cells throughout our whole body. This fat-soluble vitamin can be found in the skin’s sebum which enables our skin to retain moisture by creating a natural barrier. Since sebum is essentially a skin oil those who have oiler skins in areas like their face tend to have more vitamin E.
As we get older both our sebum and vitamin E levels decrease. In addition, ultraviolet sources like sunlight, tanning beds and some fluorescent light bulbs can make us lose vitamin E.
The Benefits of vitamin E for the skin
Vitamin E can be found in skincare products such as moisturizers. It can make moisturizers work better. Vitamin E can make moisturizers work better by stopping the skin from losing moisture. In addition, it also protects the cells from damage and softens the skin.
It is also believed that vitamin E can help when it comes to treating sun damage. It can help treat sun damage by absorbing the UVB rays by reducing inflammation. It can also further help other issues caused by sun damage such as swelling, reddening and skin thickening.
Although Vitamin E can help treat sun damage you should not replace your sunscreen with vitamin E oil. Vitamin E is only able to absorb one of the two UV lights that damage the skin which is UVB light. It cannot absorb UVA lights!
In addition, Vitamin E is only able to absorb some of the UVB lights and not absorb it fully. Essentially it can only absorb some of the UVB lights and is not able to absorb the UVA lights which causes sunburns and skin cancer. Therefor you should make sure to regularly apply sunscreen as part of your skincare routine.
Uses of Vitamin E for healthy skin
Your skin type plays a role when it comes to how vitamin E can benefit your skin. Those who have a dry skin are more likely to see benefits from vitamin E. The reason that those with dry skin are more likely to see benefits from vitamin E is due to the moisturizing benefits it provides.
Those who have an oily skin that is acne prone will see less benefits from the use of vitamin E. These individuals are already getting enough vitamin E since their sebum is producing it. In general, those who have a dry and itchy skin will see more benefits from the use of vitamin E.
Vitamin E in skincare products
As we mentioned earlier vitamin E is commonly used in many skincare products such as moisturizers. Those moisturizers that contain vitamin E are more effective since they are capable to keep the cells complete and unbroken. As well vitamin E can help prevent other substances that can cause irritation by penetrating the skin.
Therefor make sure to include in your skincare routine those products that contain vitamin E. it is also important to mention that those products that contain both vitamin E and vitamin C work the best since they both are antioxidants that are beneficial for the skin.
