Wait: Is That Really Hypoallergenic?
People with allergies and sensitive skin (which is a lot of us!) have to be especially careful when it comes to the products they use to clean and moisturize their skin. Any wrong move, and BAM… redness, irritation, inflammation, and other symptoms flare up. People deal with these issues – and, unfortunately, the “solutions” they’re buying often turn out to be a big part of the problem.
Buyer Beware
When people are struggling with dry skin, eczema, and other issues, they often turn to their dermatologists for recommendations. Or they go to their local drug store or box store to find a product that they hope will meet their needs.
Unfortunately, as a recent study published in JAMA Dermatology reveals, they are likely paying more while receiving sub-par products. Hypoallergenic products – or, more accurately, products labeled as “hypoallergenic” – tend to cost more. And they contain a surprise or two:
- 45% of “fragrance-free” products had at least one chemical classed as a “fragrance cross-reactor or botanical ingredient.”
- 83% of “hypoallergenic” products had at least one potentially allergenic component.
- 95% of products that claimed to be “dermatologist recommended” had at least one ingredient on the North American Contact Dermatitis Group list of allergens.
- And those “dermatologist recommended” products? They’re 20% more expensive per ounce.
Part of the problem is that “dermatologist recommended” isn’t a set standard. Three out of 3000 dermatologists could have recommended a product to substantiate such a claim. Does this mean it works, or it works as claimed? Not necessarily. Thus, consumers face a real challenge in choosing the best products.
This is where you come in. Dr. Steve Xu, lead author of the study, as well as MD and instructor of dermatology at Northwestern University, suggests that dermatologists are as “specific as possible in recommending both a brand and product type to their patients.”
