It is essential that you build a correct skincare routine to properly take care of your skin. But once you have built a proper skincare routine you should not overwhelm your skin with it. Skin needs to take breaks and be able to breath once in a while also. In this article we will look at the time that needs to be taken between skincare steps and related topics.

The time to wait between skincare steps

When it comes to the time you need to wait between applying skincare products there are certain guidelines that must be followed. By following these guidelines, you will get the best results from the skincare products you are using.

You should start with cleansing and then toners. First clean the skin and then apply the toner. After having applied the toner, you can then apply serums. In case you are applying many layers of products with active ingredients it can be helpful to give each one a minute or two to be fully absorbed into the skin. This will enable them to get fully absorbed into the uppermost layer of the skin.

You can then start applying the heavier and thicker products such as moisturizers. If your moisturizer is oily better wait a few minutes before moving onto the next step. End your skincare routine with applying sunscreen. Try to give your sunscreen a few minutes to be fully absorbed before applying makeup.

Your skin needs time to absorb the products

When discussing how long to wait between skincare steps it is essential to discuss the time needed for the skin to absorb the skincare products also. The rate of how our skin absorbs different products varies. Some skincare products are absorbed faster by our skin while others take longer for our skin to absorb them. Factors that can impact the absorption rate of skincare products include age, skin type & duration of exposure.  Certain skincare products such as cleansers take less time to be absorbed into the skin. Therefor the order of the skincare products is essential. Is best to start with those products that take less time to be absorbed into the skin and then move on to those that take longer.

The time it takes products such as serums to be absorbed into the skin is based on the type of serum. Factors that impact the absorption rate of serums into skin include if the serum is oil based or gel based. But in general, most serum can be absorbed into skin immediately.

There are other skincare formulas that can take much longer to be fully absorbed into the skin such as 30 minutes. But this does not mean that you must wait that long between skincare routine steps. As a general rule most skincare products are manufactured to be able to begin their absorption process immediately after application.

Is the order you apply the skincare products important?

Layering the skincare products in the right order is important. This is due to the fact that some skincare products may take longer to be fully absorbed into the skin than others. As the best rule to be used when applying skincare products is to first apply the lighter and thinner ones and then move on to applying the thicker and heavier ones. This is because lighter skincare products are absorbed into the skin much faster than the heavier and thicker skincare products. For example, toner and are serums which are lighter should be applied before heavier skincare products such as oils and creams.

In addition, the skin condition you are trying to treat plays a part when it comes to the order of the skincare products. For example, if you are trying to treat acne and breakouts you should apply the acne and breakout products initially. This way these products are closest to your skin and can have a bigger impact on the problem you are trying to treat.  Being consistent when applying your skincare routine is also essential. By being consistent with your skincare routine you will get the biggest benefits.

Another important factor when it comes to how you apply skincare products is to apply products that work well together. For example, if you are trying to treat acne and you apply too many acne products it can cause irritation to the skin. This is due to the fact some acne products may not work in a cohesive way with other acne products. As a general rule try not to overload your skin with the same products types since this can be counterproductive.
