In general, when it comes to skincare products articles and marketing online and in general, are more designed and are targeting women. This is due to the fact that when it comes to skincare products women spend much more than men. But we must note that this is true only in western cultures. In some Asian countries such as South Korea men’s skincare products get as much attention as those of women is some instances.

Therefor skincare manufacturers orient their marketing more towards women. So, what should men do when it comes to going about when it comes to choosing skincare products. Should they go ahead and use the ones made for women. In this article we look closer into this topic and try to look at different aspects of it.

The difference between skincare products for men and women

There are differences when it comes skincare products made for men and women. These differences stem from the structural differences between the skin of men and women.

Collagen and thickness of skin

Generally, men’s skin has and produces more collagen than women’s skin. The skin of men is also thicker, tighter and firmer. But one very interesting and essential difference when it comes to the production of collagen when it comes to men must be noted here. Both men and women lose collagen levels with time and ageing. But the levels of collagen level in men reduces consistently over time while in women they are significantly decreased suddenly after menopause.

In addition, due to the men’s skin being more firm and thicker it ages better and handles changes to skin with aging better. Due to these men’s skin tends to remain youthful longer than women. Although men’s skin retains its youthful look longer when the aging process finally happens the changes occur much faster. Furthermore, men are more likely to have saggy eyes, dark circles and lose their skin’s flexibility more.

Shaving & facial hair

Men have more hair on their skin. This is due to the fact that men have more hair follicles. In addition, these hair follicles are larger and are present in a higher proportion on the face and neck. Due to these certain characteristics of men’s skin the only way they can get rid of this hair is by continuous shaving. Due to continuous shaving men tend to have a more irritated skin with cuts, razor burns and bumps. Therefor when men are building their skincare routine, they must focus their attention more on dealing with problems causes by continuous shaving. For many men when it comes to their facial skin the continuous effects of shaving on the skin are their main concern.

Men’s skin is oilier

Due to the skin of men having larger pores and more sebaceous glands which are active their skin produces more oil. Due to having an oilier skin men’s skin tends to be more acne prone than women’s skin. In addition, men’s skin is less likely to suffer from dry skin than women. Again, here when it comes to building skincare routine for men it must address the tendency of skin to be more oily and less dry.

The reasons men’s skin is oilier is also linked to the male hormones. Male hormones traditionally are able to produce more oil than women. To be more specific men have oilier skin because they produce more testosterones than women. Men tend to have more fluctuation in testosterones levels. This fluctuation in testosterones levels increases sebum production. When this increase in sebum production is combined with follicles that are clogged it can lead to growth of bacteria. The results appear on the surface of the skin as acne and breakouts.

Unlike women men do not suffer from monthly cycles of fluctuation in hormones as women do. But the testosterones levels can alter due to other activities which can cause acne. Hormonal fluctuation in men can be caused by exercise, stress, sexual intercourse, age and genetic profiles.

Are women skincare products effective for men?

Skincare products that are made for women have many active ingredients that are also effective for men’s skin. But at the same time many of ingredients in skincare products for women are not necessary for men, specially in younger age.
